v1 .0 d e c 20 06 data sheet AG8200 pow e r-o ver-eth ern e t module 5.6. groundi ng if the AG8200 is supplied from a grounded s ource (e.g. a standard multi-c hannel pse) it is important that the ?vdc output is not connected to ground. connecting both input and output to ground will result in a short circuit that will prevent t he AG8200 from operating correctly. 5.7. output a d justmen t the AG8200 output voltage is s e t ex ternally by the ra resistor . if the ra resistor is open circuit (o/c) then the output is set to its ma ximum voltage. if the ra res i stor is a s h ort circuit (s/c) then the output will be set to it s minimum voltage. table 3 be lo w shows the output voltage range of each of t he product variants and the valu es of ra r e quired to set the nominal output voltage. figure 5: output adjustment setting the output voltage, connect ra betw een a d j and +vdc a g 8 2 0 3 a g 8 2 0 5 a g 8 2 1 2 r a o u t p u t r a o u t p u t r a o u t p u t o / c 4 . 5 v o / c 7 . 5 v o / c 1 4 . 0 v 5 k 6 3 . 3 v 3 k 5 v 6 8 k 1 2 . 0 v s / c 2 . 5 v s / c 4 . 5 v s / c 7 . 5 v table 3: output adjustme nt resistor (ra) value *note: the r e sults in table 3 are u nder minimum load conditions ? silver telecom 2005 7
v1 .0 d e c 20 06 data sheet AG8200 pow e r-o ver-eth ern e t module 5.8. typical connections the AG8200 only requires external bridge r e ct ifiers on its input, the ra resistor and a low cost capacitor on its output (a minimum of 470f is recommended) as shown in figure 6. the value of c1 will be rela ted to the maxim u m load st ep c hange that the output needs t o drive. for example, in an applic ation were the output needs to c ope with a 1.8 amp load step change, a minimum of 470f should be used. this can be a standard low cos t electrolytic and does not need to be a low esr type. figure 6 s hows a 16v capac itor that would cover all product variants up to and includ ing the ag8212, see table 1: ordering information. the class programming input is optional and provides great flexibility to the AG8200. further information on using this input can be found in sections 5.4. power classificatio n . v1 .0 d e c 20 06 data sheet AG8200 pow e r-o ver-eth ern e t module 6. t y pical application the AG8200 can be used in numerous applications . in the example show n in figure 7, the data outputs from the switch are connected to the inputs of a midspan. the midspan will then add power (to the data) on each output that supports po wer over ethernet (poe). in this example port 1 is c onnected to an et hernet camera and port 2 is c onnected t o a wireless ac cess point, both of these devices have a built-in AG8200. when the midspan is switched on (or when the device is connect ed), the midspan will check eac h output for a poe signat ure. on ports 1 and 2 the ag8 200 will id entify themselv es as poe en abled devices and the midspan will supply both data and power to these peripherals. the other ports (shown in this example) wil l not have a poe signature and the midspan will only pass the data through to these periph e ra ls. the midspan will continuo usly monitor each output to see if a poe enabled device has been added or removed. figure 7: typical app lication ? silver telecom 2005 9
v1 .0 d e c 20 06 data sheet AG8200 pow e r-o ver-eth ern e t module 7. t y pical recommendations figure 8: typical layout gives an example of the tracki ng needed fo r the AG8200. r1, r2 and r3 are optional c o mponents , but c1 needs to be positioned close to the output pins of the AG8200 as poss i ble to minimise the c u rr ent loop. the thermal performance of the AG8200 can be improved by incr easing the surface area of t he output tracks (+vdc and - vdc) this is not applic able if the AG8200 is in a socket. figure 8: ty pical layout 8. operating t e mperature range because th e ag820 0 is a power component , it will g e n e rate heat, so it is imp o rtant that this be taken into consideration at the design stage. the heart of the AG8200 is a dc/dc converter, which like any other power supply will generate heat. the amount of h eat generated by the module wi ll depend o n the load it is required to drive and the input vo ltage supp li ed by the pse. the information shown with in this section of datasheet is referenced to a nominal 48vdc input voltage supplied by the pse. the AG8200 has a maximum ambient operating tem perature of 70 o c s e e figure 10, figure 11 & figure 12. thes e results are in still air without any he atsinking, the performance of the AG8200 c a n be improv ed by fo rcing the a i rflow over the part or by using a heatsink (see the AG8200 application note on heatsinking for more information). the AG8200 has built-in thermal protection, to prevent the module from being damaged if operated beyond its power / temper ature specification. if the thermal protection circuit is activated then the dc/dc conv erter will s hut down and will re main off until the inp u t voltage is removed an d reapplie d . in shut down mode the ag820 0 input current will be le ss than 5ma, which is below th e pse output hold current. the pse will as sume that the AG8200 has been dis c onnected and will sw itch its output off and will return to testing f o r a correct signature. the thermal protection ci rcuit will continue to disable the dc/dc converter until the AG8200 tem perature has cooled suffic i ently. ? silver telecom 2005 10
v1 .0 d e c 20 06 data sheet AG8200 pow e r-o ver-eth ern e t module because each applic ation is diffe rent it is impossible to give fix e d and absolute thermal recommendations. however it is important that any enclos u re used has sufficient ventilation for the AG8200 and a direct airflow if possible. one simple method for drawing some of t he heat away from the AG8200 is shown in figure 9. power planes connected to the +v dc and gnd pins of t he AG8200 can be used to draw heat away from the dc/dc converter via the output pins. these power planes must be on the outer l a ye rs of the pcb and the AG8200 must not be fitted into a socket (this example is suitable for both ?s and ?d variants). figure 9: pow e r plane heatsink for AG8200-s figure 10, figure 11 and figu re 12 show the max i mum ambient temperature under different load conditions. thes e figure have been recorded in a s ealed enclosure (in s t ill air) using a heater element to elevate the am bient temperature (w ithin the enclosure). 9. over-volt a ge the AG8200 may be damaged by voltage inputs great er than 80v. if protection from electrostatic dischar ge (esd) or other hi gh voltage transients is r equired it is recommended that an over-voltage clamping dev ic e is fitted between the vin+ and the vin- pins. typically an smaj58 will be sufficient. ? silver telecom 2005 11
